the story behind solo;sun
solo;sun was created for people who care deeply for their skin, their mental well-being, and the stories behind what they use. people who want their self-care to mean something.
my story starts with two things: shea butter and mental health.
it might sound like an unexpected pairing. but not if you’ve ever needed to feel good in your body again.
i’m ngodoo golden, a licensed esthetician and former mental health counselor with a master’s in clinical mental health. i’m also the child of nigerian immigrants, raised between generations of wisdom and cultural pride.
before skincare, i spent years helping people navigate anxiety, trauma, and identity. now, i bring that same insight to solo;sun. i know how confidence, touch, and reflection shape how we show up in the world.
so i built a space where skincare routines also serve as nervous system resets.
i started solo;sun because i saw the same need in two very different places.
in mental health, people were navigating stress, self-doubt, and burnout.
in skincare, people were navigating breakouts, hyperpigmentation, and dry, irritated skin.
in both, they just wanted to feel good again but didn’t know where to start.
solo;sun is the start.
i work with people who want honesty, simplicity, and care that doesn’t just scratch the surface. from the treatment room to your bathroom counter, my goal is the same: to help you feel informed, supported, and seen.
and it doesn’t stop there.
solo;sun’s most popular product, ;reflect body butter, embodies this. it’s more than just a body butter, it’s a gentle reminder to check in with yourself. the earthy scent and long-lasting moisture serve as a soft embrace, encouraging you to breathe and be present.
the semicolon in our name is intentional too. in writing, a semicolon connects two related thoughts. it says, this isn’t over yet. in mental health, a semicolon represents suicide awareness and symbolizes hope and resilience. it marks the decision to continue, as a way to say: i’m still here.
it ties my clinical experience to the heart of this brand: that caring for yourself (your skin, your mind) isn’t just maintenance. it’s a way of showing up for yourself.
every service, every ingredient, and every recommendation is backed by experience and intention.
and everything i do honors the people who made this possible.
that includes my parents, whose nonprofit—amor initiatives—supports underserved communities in rural nigeria. part of the proceeds from every jar of whipped shea butter goes directly to that mission.
this work matters to me because it’s personal. these are my people. this is my home country. these are communities that don’t have easy access to proper medical care. and this is one way solo;sun can show up.
it’s also for my grandparents—baba + aya nyamor and baba + aya itiavkase—whose strength, joy, and fire live in every part of this work. their legacy reminds me:
caring for yourself is never just about you.
it’s part of something deeper, older, more collective.
solo;sun isn’t here to draw attention to me.
it’s here to remind you to pay attention to you. Your skin, your mind, and the way you care for both.
