In this post, we’re going to break down:

  • What double cleansing actually is (and what it’s not)

  • Who needs it and when it makes sense

  • The difference between oil- and water-based cleansers

  • Common myths that need to die already

  • How I do it professionally and at home

  • What to try if it doesn’t work for you

Let’s get into it.

THE BASICS;

Double cleansing means using two different types of cleansers, back-to-back, in one routine:

  1. An oil-based cleanser to break down oil-soluble debris (makeup, SPF, sebum).

  2. A water-based cleanser to lift sweat, dirt, and leftover residue.

You’re not just washing twice. You’re using two different chemistries to fully remove what the day layered onto your face. And no—this does not mean you’ll strip your skin.

THE METHOD;

Here’s how I do it:

  1. Start with an oil cleanser on dry skin. Massage it in gently for at least 60 seconds—this helps dissolve buildup without the friction of washcloths or scrubbing pads.

  2. Rinse with lukewarm water. If the oil cleanser is water-soluble (which it should be), it’ll rinse off easily.

  3. Follow up with a gentle water-based cleanser that suits your skin type. Cleanse again, then rinse.

  4. Continue with your usual routine—moisturizers, serums, actives, etc.

You don’t need expensive tools. You don’t need 10 steps. You just need the right products in the right order.

👉🏾 Pro tip: You only need to double cleanse at night—unless your morning skin is feeling greasy or layered with heavy products.

THE BENEFITS;

Here’s what happens when you stop treating cleansing like a one-step job:

  • Less congestion and fewer breakouts over time

  • Makeup removal without scrubbing or cotton rounds

  • Oil control without stripping your moisture barrier

  • Better absorption of the skincare you’re already using

  • Less irritation from leftover sunscreen and sweat

It’s not about doing more. It’s about doing it right.

THE MYTHS;

Let’s clear a few things up:

❌ You don’t need to wear makeup to double cleanse.
❌ It’s not just for oily skin types.
❌ Double cleansing doesn’t cause dryness—over-cleansing with the wrong products does.
❌ You don’t need a $40 balm. Drugstore options work if they’re well-formulated.

You also don’t need to cleanse until your skin “squeaks.”

THE PRODUCTS;

Oil-based cleansers break down oil-soluble debris. Look for:

  • Ingredients like sunflower seed oil, jojoba oil, squalane

  • Formulas labeled “non-comedogenic” if you're prone to breakouts

  • A texture that rinses clean—skip anything that leaves a waxy residue

This cleansing oil is my absolute favorite.

Water-based cleansers rinse away what’s left. Look for:

  • Sulfate-free formulas that don’t foam too much

  • pH-balanced cleansers around 5.5

  • Added ingredients like glycerin or panthenol to avoid drying out

This water-based cleanser is good for all skin types if you aren't looking to correct anything.

THE BACKUP PLAN;

If double cleansing doesn’t work for you (or doesn’t fit your lifestyle), here are a some alternatives that are not double cleansing, but still helpful:

  • Use a micellar water before your usual cleanser—no rinse needed

  • Use an oil cleanser on days you wear makeup only

  • Try a cleansing lotion or milk if both steps feel too much

  • Adjust frequency—3–4 nights per week may be enough

The goal is clarity and comfort. Not perfection. Listen to your skin and don’t force what doesn’t fit.

FINAL THOUGHTS;

Whether you’re trying to level up your skincare routine or finally figure out why your face never feels fully clean—double cleansing might be the missing piece.
